Back Handspring

DRILL 1

C-POSITION TO ARCH

This drill helps the gymnast focus on the transition from the end-position of the Roundoff and into an arch for the Back Handspring.

FOCUS POINTS

 A 

Arms cover the ears, so they follow each other through the drill.

 B 

Move the hands up alongside the legs until they reach the middle of the thighs, then open the hips and go into the arch with arms up pulled up.

EQUIPMENT
  • 1 x Foam block

DRILL 2

JUMP BACKWARDS IN ARCH POSITION

Trains the transition from the Roundoff to an arch while moving backwards, as one would do in the Back Handspring.

FOCUS POINTS

 A1 

Arms cover the ears, so they follow each other during the drill.

 A2 

Land on the back in an arch position with the legs together and knees straight.

EQUIPMENT
  • 1 x Soft mat

DRILL 3

BACK HANDSPRING TRAINER TO PRONE

In this drill, we are focusing on the correct body alignment for the Back Handspring.

FOCUS POINTS

 A 

The shoulders are raised and the arms cover the ears through the drill.

 B 

Keep the hips pressed up and the tension in the arch position.

PREREQUISITES
  • Handstand – D3

EQUIPMENT
  • 1 x Running block

  • 1 x Back Handspring trainer

  • 1 x Soft mat

DRILL 4

BACK HANDSPRING TRAINER TO SNAP POSITION

Primarily focuses on the last part of the Back Handspring, where we perform either the snapdown for a take-off or prepare for another transitional skill.

FOCUS POINTS

 A 

Keep the shoulders extended and head in between the arms.

 B 

Move through the arch position to a hollow. When in the hollow position the hips continues their motion to perform the snap.

EQUIPMENT
  • 4 x Running blocks

  • 1 x Soft mat

  • 1 x Back handspring trainer

DRILL 5

STANDING BACK HANDSPRING FROM TRAMPETTE TO PRONE

This drill lets the gymnast execute the initial part of the Back Handspring to handstand with aid from a coach.

FOCUS POINTS

 A 

Arms cover the ears so they follow each other all the time.

 

 B 

Keep the shoulders extended and hips up.

EQUIPMENT
  • 2 x Running blocks

  • 1 x Trampette

  • 1 x High soft landing

NOTES

The idea in elevating this drill is to give the coach a better working position.

DRILL 6

STANDING BACK HANDSPRING FROM TRAMPETTE TO FEET

In this drill we’re bringing all the pieces together. We still performing it with a spot to aid the gymnast in moving backwards.

EQUIPMENT
  • 2 x Running blocks

  • 1 x Trampette

  • 1 x Foam block

  • 1 x Soft landing
