Back handspring - Take-off

DRILL 1

HANDSTAND TO SET

This drill is used to give the gymnast the feeling of the flight phase between Back Handspring and the somersault.

FOCUS POINTS

 A1 

Arms should always be straight and covering the ears.

 

 A2 

The chin should be tucked in and the gymnast is looking towards the floor.

 

 B 

After bouncing off the floor, the gymnast’s upper body should be slightly hollow.

PREREQUISITES
  • Handstand - D4

EQUIPMENT
  • 1 x Airtrack

  • 1 x Landing mat

DRILL 2

HANDSTAND TO SET – TUCK LANDING

This drill emphasises the leap and body position, before starting the rotation with the lower body.

FOCUS POINTS

 A1 

Arms should always be straight and cover the ears.

 

 A2 

The chin should be tucked in and the gymnast is looking at the floor. After the rotation has started, the gymnast then starts looking at the knees.

 B 

Make sure there is a clear separation of the take-off and the tuck rotation.

EQUIPMENT
  • 1 x Airtrack

  • 1 x Landing mat

DRILL 3

HANDSTAND SET TO CANDLESTICK INTO BACK ROLL

This drill combines the last part of the Back handspring with the flight phase to better simulate a high lift before adding the tucked rotation.

FOCUS POINTS

 A1 

Arms should cover the ears during the first 1/3 of the rotation.

 A2 

The chin should be tucked during the entire drill.

 

 B 

Make sure the gymnast tightens their glutes, so there is a straight line through their body.

  • Handstand - D4

EQUIPMENT
  • 1 x Trampette

  • 4 x Running blocks

  • 1 x Soft incline

  • 1 x Salto cube

  • 2 x Landing mats

DRILL 4

HANDSTAND SET TO TUCK

This drill combines the leap with the Back tuck.

FOCUS POINTS

 A1 

Straight legs in the transition.

 

 A2 

The arms are being pulled down towards the legs just before the take-off.

PREREQUISITES
  • Back tuck - D5

EQUIPMENT
  • 1 x Trampette

  • 4 x Running blocks

  • 1 x Salto cube

  • 1 x Landing mat

  • 1 x Soft landing mat

DRILL 5

STANDING BACK HANDSPRING FROM TRAMPETTE ON AIRTRACK TO BACK TUCK

The point of elevating the Back handspring is to make the drill easier for the gymnast. That means they can focus more on the transition between the Back handspring and the Back tuck.

EQUIPMENT
  • 1 x Trampette

  • 1 x Airtrack

  • 1 x Soft mat

  • 1 x Foam block
