DRILL 1

THE ROUNDED BACK

This drill teaches the gymnast the meaning of the rounded back.

FOCUS POINTS

 A 

The gymnast should press their lower back against the floor when the shoulders leave it.

 

 B 

Chin should be tucked away and the arms straight while covering the ears.

DRILL 2

SIT-UP

The drill focuses on developing the necessary strength to complete the last half of the Front Roll.

FOCUS POINTS

 A 

Chin should be tucked away and the arms straight while covering the ears.

NOTES

If the drill is too hard, put some weight on the gymnast’s feet. It will help in the beginning.

DRILL 3

THE ROUNDED BACK ROLL

This drill focuses on a rounded back through the entire roll.

FOCUS POINTS

 A 

The gymnast's core has to be engaged.​

 B 

For great execution make sure the gymnast points it toes, keeps the chin in and arms straight.

DRILL 4

FRONT ROLL DOWN INCLINE BLOCK

The drill helps the gymnast with speed in the roll and height difference at the end, so it’s easier to finish the roll. This makes it easier for the gymnast to perform the Front Roll with correct technique.

FOCUS POINTS

 A 

The chin should be tucked in from start to finish. Make sure the gymnast doesn’t drop their head on their way up from their back.

 B 

Knee has to be pulled in, but the gymnast should think that the rotation come from the heels.
