Hurdle

DRILL 1

STANDING IN FRONT OF WALL

Static drill to teach the gymnast the correct body alignment.

FOCUS POINTS

 A 

Shin pressed against the mat in front.

 B1 

Focus on keeping a hollow upper body.

​

 B2 

Straight line from the arms to the heel of the back leg.

EQUIPMENT
  • 1 x Mat against wall

  • 1 x Side landing block

DRILL 2

HURDLE AGAINST WALL

Teaches the gymnast the hopscotch for the Hurdle.

FOCUS POINTS

 A1 

The rear leg for the hurdle also has to be the leg the gymnast uses for the hopscotch.

 

 A2 

The arms swing from behind the gymnast and forwards up to the ears.

 

 B 

Check correct body alignment and the hollow upper body in the end-position.

  • 1 x Mat against wall

  • 1 x Soft block

  • 1 x Side landing block

DRILL 3

STEP & LEG PLACEMENT

Partial static drill to focus on a wide stance.

FOCUS POINTS

 A1 

Wide leg stance.

 

 B 

Check correct body alignment and hollow upper body in the end-position.

EQUIPMENT
  • 3 x Running block

  • 1 x Soft block

DRILL 4

STEP & LEG PLACEMENT TO HANDSTAND

The gymnast practices the transition from the Hurdle to another skill, while remembering all the keypoints for the Hurdle.

FOCUS POINTS

 A 

The hands slide off the running block and are pressed down towards the shins.
 

 B 

The feet are in front of the body and the upper body folded in.

PREREQUISITES
  • Handstand - D4

EQUIPMENT
  • 1 x Mat against wall

  • 3 x Running blocks

  • 1 x Side landing mat

  • 1 x Small soft block

DRILL 5

HURDLE THROUGH TUNNEL TO HANDSTAND

Forces the gymnast to drive the power forwards down the track instead of upwards (ie. doing a long low Hurdle instead of a high short one).

EQUIPMENT
  • 3 x Running blocks

  • 1 x Soft incline

  • 1 x Landing mat
